- To begin, make a slit in the middle of each chicken breast. You just need to carve a deep enough pocket for the filling, not all the way through. Salt & pepper to taste.
- Make the Creamy Mushroom Filling: Melt butter in a large oven-safe pan over high heat. Cook for 5 minutes, or until the mushrooms are golden brown in color. - Reduce the heat to low and stir in the heavy cream and cream cheese. Toss to incorporate and season to taste with thyme, salt, and pepper.
- Cook for 30 seconds, or until baby spinach has wilted.

- Stuff the chicken breast with 2-3 tablespoons of filling, 2 slices of mozzarella, and toothpicks to hold it together.
- Clean the pan with paper towels before adding the olive oil to sear the chicken. Sear the chicken breasts for 3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Fill in the gaps with the leftover filling mixture (if there is any!).
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through, in a preheated oven. When put in the thickest portion of the bird, the internal temperature should be 149°F/65°C.
- Remove from the oven and set aside for 5 minutes to cool. Enjoy!

Leadership is often discussed in the media and literature. Everywhere you turn, there’s a new book, podcast, or motivational speech on how to improve your leadership skills.
The matter has definitely piqued people’s curiosity, which is unsurprising. Whether at home, at work, at church, or in clubs, sports teams, and other recreational and civic groups, almost everyone is a leader in some way.
It’s a curious thing, however… since there are so many individuals leading out there, there must be an equal number of people following them. Despite this, there is essentially no literature — no books, podcasts, or seminars — on how to be a successful follower. The subject is virtually entirely missing from our educational and cultural discourse.
It’s not surprising that the public is less interested in learning how to follow than it is in learning how to lead. Seeing ourselves as leaders fills us with pride and strengthens our sense of self. Everyone likes to think of themselves as self-sufficient, autonomous iconoclasts who are leading the charge and marching to their own drumbeat. The Commander in Chief. The Big Boss. The Commodore.
Nobody, however, wants to be thought of as a follower. Yuck. The term makes my nose wrinkle. It leaves an unpleasant aftertaste in the mouth. Followers are reliant, compliant, and obedient. Not at all how we would want to perceive ourselves.
Everyone in our egalitarian society wants to believe they are on the same level as everyone else. Leaders and followers try to hide the power dynamic between them as much as possible. Corporations and organizations stress the importance of everyone being part of a “team” or “family.”
Reality, on the other hand, fiercely contradicts this piece of drama.
People are as as prone, if not more so, to be followers as they are to be leaders. Employees outnumber managers, players outnumber coaches, readers outnumber writers, students outnumber professors, congregations outnumber pastors, and believers outnumber gods.
A hierarchy of authority and power exists in practically every group and organization, even if it is never discussed. Some people have the authority to issue commands, make judgments, and enforce compliance, whereas others do not. And you do follow their orders (despite the fact that this is another term we despise); you show up on time to work, turn in your homework on the due date set by your instructors, and sprint when your coach blows his whistle.
We should own up to the truth that we all find ourselves as both leaders and followers in life, rather than being deluded and self-deceived, and we should not entirely disregard the latter position in favor of the former. The fact that you’re a follower may be an unpleasant reality to accept, but it’s a reality nevertheless, and one that should be confronted front on.
Another truth: admitting that you’re a follower doesn’t have to be a painful experience. Regardless of the cultural baggage attached to the word, learning how to follow properly is a sign of a great man (and leader), not a sheep. Following successfully, like leading, is a talent that can be learned and is just as crucial to your success.
But, but, but, but… Nazis! The Required Disclaimer
While being a leader has always been preferred over being a follower, the latter has always been seen as a potentially good and virtuous vocation. Following did not get a bad reputation until after WWII, thanks to all those German goose steppers. Many Nazis justified their crimes by claiming they were merely “following instructions,” and compliance became intimately linked to blind obedience. As a result, we have a visceral response to the thought of being a follower (despite though, as previously said, we are all precisely that!).
However, basic logic and common sense should dictate that good commands, which lead to good outcomes, may be obeyed just as easily as wrong orders, which lead to horrible outcomes. Communities and nations are safe, charities are helping, and businesses are creating because of the dynamic of leading and following. Following isn’t always myopic, and it may be done with both eyes open.
All of the following should be read with the obvious disclaimer that one should never mindlessly follow anything and should never heed unethical or immoral directions. Following well should never imply completely surrendering your autonomy, but rather a conscious decision to place yourself under the leadership of someone or something in which you believe, agreeing to do whatever he or she asks of you until that person or thing violates the fundamental tenets under which you signed on. At that moment, you revoke your permission to follow.
Leadership/followship is a two-way street — a covenant — in which both parties must fulfill their obligations.
Why Should You Enjoy Being a Follower?
Learning Is Following
If the term “following” has a negative rep, maybe we might rename it “holding an apprenticeship.” Those that are above you are usually there for a reason; they have greater seniority, experience, and knowledge. They’re going to teach you something. They’re the mentor, and you’re the protégé, and the best way to get the most of this apprenticeship is to put your ego aside and do what they say.
We often believe we know whether something will work or not, whether it is a good idea or not, or if we will or will not enjoy something before we try it. Until we complete the task. We may obtain a highly definite set of information by following a leader’s directions.
Of course, individuals are occasionally put in positions of power for the wrong reasons. They don’t have any additional knowledge or understanding. Even so, we can learn – we receive an education on how not to do things. What doesn’t seem to work. These lessons might also be useful should we find ourselves in a similar leadership position in the future.
You could discover that you’re in the wrong field of employment, or at the wrong church or school, by pursuing a specific route. But, before you make that decision, you must first make an honest effort to follow the specified schedule.
It’s Freeing to Follow
There’s no getting past the truth that leaders have greater power than followers. They have the ability to tell you what to do, but you do not have the ability to tell them what to do. Their position offers them authority, which is great since it allows them to accomplish more things.
However, with great power comes great responsibility. Because they are in command, the burden of achieving success and the penalties of failure fall squarely on their shoulders. It’s wonderful to be king, but there’s always a dagger hanging over your head.
You have less authority as a follower, but you also have less obligation. And it may be a good thing as well.
You want to be in charge of some aspects of your life because the power outweighs the responsibilities. Holding ultimate responsibility in every aspect of life, on the other hand, would drive a man nuts. Nobody can claim to be an expert in every field. Nobody has the time or resources to make choices on all issues. It’s good for your mental health to have areas of your life where you can just surrender — where you can allow someone else be the expert and tell you what to do. Delegating authority may really free you up to accomplish your finest job. You can focus on completing a good job when you just have one thing to accomplish and instructions on how to do it.
For example, I don’t want to be a fitness programming leader; I also don’t want to design my own routines. That’s what I did, and the results were unsatisfactory at best. Instead, I let my Starting Strength coach tell me what I needed to accomplish each day. I gladly bow to his authority. As a consequence, I’ve made substantial weightlifting improvement and am stronger than I’ve ever been. Plus, I can redirect the bandwidth saved by being a follower in the gym to places where I actually wish to lead.
The similar trend may be seen in various areas of life. To be sure, there are benefits to being an entrepreneur, but there are also benefits to being an employee; freed from the duties of management administration, the latter is able to focus on a more concentrated task, and often leave that job at the office at the end of the day. Similarly, there are benefits to coaching, but there is also a lot of freedom in just being able to perform as an athlete.
Following These Steps Can Assist You in Achieving Your Goals
Individuals can do a lot of amazing things on their own. However, there are many more that need the formation of a group, an organization, or an institution. It is impossible for a quarterback to win the Super Bowl by himself. Charitable organizations multiply the reach and influence that a single individual may have. And, despite the fact that the concept has grown quite controversial, enormous institutions may complete tasks that would otherwise be impossible. Governments are in charge of safeguarding and governing democracy. Militaries are the ones who win global wars. Even churches, which are among the least popular of all organizations, exalt spirituality above and beyond its potential as a personal endeavor.
By necessity, all of these teams and organizations are organized in various levels of hierarchy. Companies who have been enthralled by the notion of perfect equality in theory have discovered that when put into practice, the concept leads to turmoil and dysfunction. A chain of command must be in place for a huge project to be completed, or for a large mission to be completed.
When you put yourself in a position like this, you give up part of your power and freedom – the capacity to do things your way and make all the decisions. However, you acquire the freedom to be a part of something bigger than yourself, to be a member of a team pursuing a goal that you couldn’t achieve on your own.
The Path to Leadership Is As Followed
We often behave as though following and leading are two opposing concepts. However, they are inextricably linked: excellent followers become good leaders. You can’t lead if you can’t follow properly. Good leaders never ask their followers to perform anything they are unwilling to do or haven’t already done.
According to The Soldier’s Guide, a 1952 Army document,
“A leader’s capacity to lead oneself is one of the most crucial qualities he or she must possess. That is why all of our genuinely great leaders have shown exceptional self-control. Being a good follower requires a high level of self-discipline, and if you aren’t a good follower, you will likely never be a good leader. YOU MUST FIRST LEARN HOW TO TAKE ORDERS BEFORE YOU CAN GIVE THEM.”
“Great men have almost always proven themselves as eager to follow as they later demonstrated competent to lead,” Lord Moran said.
It’s not simply that excellent followers need discipline; good leaders need it as well. Good followers, on the other hand, understand that ego is the enemy and exhibit the type of humility that is essential in a successful leader. People who believe they are “too good” to follow instructions in a lower-level role are unlikely to succeed in a higher-level post.
What Makes a Good Follower?
“Whatever you are, do your job properly.”
The sentence above was carved on the entrance of a Scottish castle. And it’s a great concept to follow.
Throughout your life, you will find yourself in many situations. You’ll be a leader on occasion. You’ll be a follower at times. Whatever position you have, perform to the best of your abilities. Your task may seem little and insignificant, yet it is most certainly critical. Without it, the organization you work for would not be able to operate to its full potential. Instead than focusing on yourself, concentrate on the bigger objective. You’ll find greater significance and happiness in your job after you’ve done so.
Assisting others in realizing their full potential (while also realizing your own) is a win-win situation.
A good follower isn’t just concerned with himself and how he might achieve his own objectives. Leaders will notice this and will either find it unpleasant or threatening. Either outcome may stifle your power inside a company.
Make it your objective to assist your leaders and coworkers attain their full potential to prevent these scenarios. To put it another way, try to be as valuable as possible. Don’t worry if you don’t receive credit for excellent suggestions you provide to your supervisor. Volunteer to undertake the tasks that no one else is interested in. Help your colleagues by acting as a cheerleader. Prepare for the needs of others around you ahead of time. Make every effort to make everyone appear nice.
“Man, it’s a formula for getting taken advantage of and walked over,” anyone with a short-term, scarcity mindset will think after reading that advise. While it’s true that some leaders may take advantage of your kindness, effective leaders will recognize and reward subordinates who seek to make their jobs simpler with promotions and/or increases.
“Clear the route for the people above you and you will ultimately build a path for yourself,” Ryan Holiday wrote in Ego is the Enemy.
Don’t blindly follow.
When most people hear the term “follower,” they imagine a mindless drone who, when presented with a problem, says, “I was simply following instructions.” These individuals are followers, yet they are flawed. While they’ll follow your instructions, they’ll only follow your instructions. Not even a smidgeon. They lack the capacity to use practical insight and make independent judgments that will help an organization or mission succeed. By hiding behind the excuse “I merely do what I’m told,” these mindless followers abandon accountability. Instead of making a leader’s work simpler, these robots may make his life a living hell by pestering him with inquiries about everything and blaming him when things go wrong.
Being a good follower, on the other hand, necessitates acting like a leader. When you believe a notion is stupid and unhelpful, you must be willing to voice your concerns. Even if you strictly followed the rules, you must be prepared to accept responsibility for any difficulties you cause. You must be willing to expand on the instructions you’ve been given, to be inventive, and to act even if no one has specifically ordered you to.
What to Do When You Don’t Agree With a Leader’s Requests
You have entire liberty in deciding whatever obligations you accept, and you should be as well-informed as possible about what the commitment entails and what will be required of you when making such choices.
After you commit, you have less control over how you behave; unless you are asked to do anything illegal or unethical, you are expected to carry out the role’s responsibilities, even if you disagree with a notion, believe there is a better method, or just don’t feel like it. That’s what you agreed to and/or were paid to do. That’s exactly what you agreed to.
Keep in mind that leaders in any organization or institution will always make poor decisions and issue ineffective directives. It’s not always an indication you’re in the wrong place when you’re asked to do stupid things; it’s simply part of the job. It may be rewarding to remain on as long as the job still provides satisfactions and consolation, and the team is still working toward a decent aim – however slowly and clumsily.
But what if you’re often given orders/tasks that you find egregiously stupid or mind-numbingly pointless, and you refuse to carry them out? You still have many options:
- Stay the course patiently, and you’ll eventually rise to the position of leader, with the authority to put your own ideas into action. Even if you don’t end up in a leadership role, your influence may be desperately needed in the organization’s culture. You could conclude that you can still make a difference by making minor improvements, and you’ll do whatever it takes to get some credibility and work your way up the chain of command, eventually calling the major shots yourself.
- Change your assumptions about what your following will entail. There may be times when, while no longer embracing an organization’s beliefs, you nevertheless want to be a part of it in some way. For example, you may have lost your religion yet continue to attend church for your wife and children’s sake. In this instance, you should just be open with other members about the status of your commitment so that they may manage their expectations accordingly. Most people are tolerant of this attitude; they’d prefer someone be straightforward and declare they won’t do something than say yes to something they don’t intend to follow through on.
- Immediately leave the role/job/position. You can’t always keep going because you’re at odds with the leadership. If you’ve expressed your issues with leadership to no effect, and you’ve tried all you can to make it work but haven’t made any progress, it’s time to walk away (ideally without burning bridges).
One thing you should avoid is continuing to play your part while sandbagging your effort. You become an albatross around the neck of the group’s objectives, which is unjust to both the leader and your comrades. To hold a job while wilfully disobeying orders and neglecting to complete one’s tasks is to delude oneself into believing that your private disobedience qualifies as true rebellion, despite the fact that you lack the courage to outwardly defy authority. You keep your integrity while being a conformist.

The Celtics led by 11 points going into the fourth quarter, and Tatum’s three-point play with 6:59 left gave them a 109-94 advantage. With 5:02 remaining, his 3-pointer from the left corner made it 116-99.
After one quarter, the Lakers had hit nine of their first 12 baskets, leading 38-30.

You could think the oil is popping since it fizzles a bit immediately away (particularly if you’re using an aluminum popper rather than a stainless steel one). The prelim kernels will explode after 30-90 seconds – it’s more of a “POP!” sound than a crackle or fizzle. To be sure, open the lid.
3. Toss in the remaining popcorn.
Toss in the 12 cup of popcorn kernels, shut the lid, and stir until everything is well combined. There will be a genuine eruption of popping in only a minute or two (slightly longer if using a stainless steel popper); it will be a bit tougher to stir, and the popping will quiet down rapidly after that.
Remove the popper from the heat as soon as the popping stops and pour the popcorn into a large mixing basin. Don’t wait until the popping has completely stopped; by then, it will be too late and the popcorn will have been scorched. It’s merely a matter of waiting until the gap between pops narrows to a few seconds; it’s better to do it too soon than too late.
There will always be a few that burn (and a few that don’t pop), but if you pull the popper from the flame at the correct moment, it will just be a few.
4. Season with salt, butter, and/or any additional toppings you can think of. Always start with a tiny quantity; you can always add more later, but you can’t take it back if you oversalt the popcorn. Start with a teaspoon of salt and a tablespoon of melted butter; fully combine with a big spoon and taste.

3. Wait a minute until you hear a loud popping sound. Remove the popper from the heat as soon as the popping pauses and pour the popcorn into a big bowl.
